Tomorrow Publishing House: A Better Tomorrow for Our Children
Author:Huang Xingping______Data:2008 06-05

Tomorrow Publishing House is one of China’s most distinctive publishing operations, developing its market within a publishing model combining original writing, outstanding promotions, and international cooperation.  2007 sales amounted to 260 million RMB (USD$38 million).   Tomorrow publishes about 400 new books a year and has about 1,000 titles in its backlist. Within the Top 100 Children’s Bestsellers, Tomorrow Publishing registered 25 titles in 2007, including six of the top ten on the list.

Tomorrow Publishing President & Chief Editor Liu Haiqi credits a strong promotion and marketing program as the key to their success, along with a group of well-known Chinese authors and the introduction of top-grade foreign picture books, such as Flowers on Barbed Wire, which has been published, and Greedy Caterpillar, which will be published in May 2008.

Bestselling Chinese authors such as Wu Meizhen and Yu Yujun are prized assests.  But, foreign authors such as Roald Dahl (Great Britain), Erich Kastner (Germany), Tove Jannson (Finland), and other renowned children’s authors are also part of their list.  And, fortuitously, Tomorrow Publishing had bought the rights to the works of Roberto Innocent, this year’s winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Best Illustrator, before the award was even announced.

According to Mr. Liu, children’s books comprise more than 50% of sales, and titles such as literary works, encyclopedias, and illustrated books have a natural appeal to this market.  Currently, Tomorrow ranks third behind Zhejiang Juvenile and Children’s Publising House and 21st Century Publishing House in the lucrative children’s book market.

This year, Tomorrow Publishing House has intensified the introduction of picture books by cooperating with other companies. Apart from integrating all kinds of resources concerning content, it also improves promotional channels.  At the 18th session of the National Book Trade Fair, Tomorrow Publishing House launched the illustrated book “Are You Afraid?” Help Yourself with Baby Psychology. Books published by other cooperating publishers were launched at the same time, such as Reunion.
