Chongqing Publishing Group: the Publishing Industry’s Black Horse

Chongqing Publishing Group is called the black horse of the publishing industry. It has grown into a large publishing group, integrating books, newspapers and magazines, electronic audio and video products, cartoons and online publishing sectors, covering creative industry, paper trade, printing and packaging, publication distribution and real estate, with thousands of employees.

In 2003, China’s central government designated Chongqing as the only provincial experimental city for cultural restructuring in the country’s western region. While grasping the essence of the policy and ensuring controlling shares, Chongqing has attracted excellent private enterprises and established more than ten joint-equity companies, and it has won contracts for three projects including the Publishing Media Creative Center, University City Tianjian (Print Media) Cartoon Base and Jiangjin Modern Printing and Packaging Base.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Chongqing Publishing Media Creative Center was held on November 18 2009. In September 2008, it was approved as a National Publishing Media Creative Zone (Center) by the General Administration of Press and Publication. It will become a creative plotting base, integrating book subject selection, digital online publishing, and cartoon production as well as production and development of derived products, with estimated investment of 1 billion yuan. Chongqing Publishing Group has spent 40 million yuan establishing culture companies in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong to expand subject selection and plotting, resource exploration and marketing publication to China’s three largest publishing centers; this has not only attracted a large number of first-class writers and led to the publication of a series of bestsellers including Female Psychologist, The Tibet Code and Mole World, but has also enabled Chongqing Publishing Group to join the international “Retelling Myth” alliance, cooperate with international famous publishing groups such as Penguin Group, become a member of the working group for the China Book International Project and win honors from the National Advanced Publishing Houses for Book Copyright Export and Key Enterprises for Culture Export, among others.

Chongqing Publishing Group is developing publishing-based cultural industry chains to support the main sector with diversified business income and has established large publishing funds.

In the textbook and supplementary teaching materials sector, Wuzhou Culture Media (Group) Co., Ltd has over 30 product series and over 500 product varieties in publication; the company will invest 20 million yuan in revolutionary classic cartoons intended for pupils; in general books, apart from its education center publications, it has also integrated the editing and publishing resources of the group and established social sciences, literature and art, science and technology, children and fine art centers; in digital publishing, it saw rapid development in 2009, with its revenue from online sales reaching 11.36 million yuan, up by 90.2% year on year; sales revenue of the Reading Some Classics electronic paper book reader was 2.09 million yuan; it exported nearly 1,200 electronic copyrights; in addition, it established University City Tianjian (Print Media) Cartoon Base and succeeded in multimedia interactive publishing; in printing and paper industry, since its inception, Quality Product Printing Co., Ltd has generated a profit for three years in a row; Jiangjin Modern Printing & Packaging Base is making efforts to introduce printing and packaging enterprises into Chongqing, and after completion, the annual sales is expected to reach 1.2 billion yuan, with output value expected to total over 5 billion yuan; the paper company, Chongqing Haiye Industry Co., Ltd generated sales revenue of 800 million yuan and profit of 23.98 million yuan in 2009; in real estate, its subsidiary, Zhengsheng Industry Co., Ltd has finished the 98,000 m2 Peaceful City of Freedom project on the Three Gorges Square in Shapingba and started sales operations; it has also signed an agreement with Beijing Wangfujing Department Store (Group) Co., Ltd for a 20-year strategic partnership; in 2009, it completed its Zhengsheng Broadway Square project in Yangjiaping. All of its commercial apartments sold out, and its anchor store signed a 20-year lease with Grand Ocean Department Store.

The accumulated circulation of Reading Some Classics Series launched by Chongqing Publishing Group has exceeded 8 million copies nationwide. Apart from traditional publishing, Chongqing Publishing Group has directed its attention towards publishing digital versions. Cooperating with Hanwang Technology Co., Ltd, it released the electronic-paper joint edition of the entire Reading Some Classics Series, installed with about 500 volumes of classic bestsellers including Reading Some Classics, which has become quite popular among government functionaries. Over 2,600 units have been sold.
